Local Delivery
The NRCS Field Office is the target for the delivery of climate, snow survey, and water supply forecast related products. Through
state office specialists (Climate Data Liaisons, Water Supply Specialists, and Data Collection Office staffs), field office and state office
personnel are provided with training and materials to meet the needs of their customers.
Centralized Forecasting System (CFS)
The Snow Survey and Water Supply Forecasting Program has a Centralized Forecasting System (CFS), which is automated for
handling information related to water supply forecasting such as streamflow, precipitation, snow depth and snow water equivalent, and
reservoir data. These data are available for the current water year (October 1 through September 30) and for historical water years.
Numerous routines and interactive programs for manipulating water supply data are included in utility programs within CFS. These are
mainly intended to aid in applying Snow Survey and Water Supply Forecasting Program information for conservation in the field.
CDBS Menu System
The Climatic Data Access Network (CDAN) was established to facilitate the distribution of climatic data and interpretations to NRCS
field offices. A menu system supports the Network by providing a consistent interface to the Centralized Database System (CDBS), a
national database which houses the basic climatic data needed for interpretation and delivery. The menu system is called the CDBS Menu
system because its main function is to provide direct interaction with CDBS. The CDBS Menu system also supports utility functions, help,
and an exit from the system.
Internet Services
Climate, snow survey and water supply forecasting products and services are currently available to those customers with Internet access in several ways.
Both the Centralized Forecasting System and the CDBS Menu System are now available using TELNET software. Customers now
have the capability to log on to these systems, perform geographic station searches within the database, analyze data, and create and
view products/files for downloading using FTP (File Transfer Protocol) via their Intenet connection. The Internet address to both systems is
wcc.nrcs.usda.gov.
Numerous products are available across the Internet through the National Water and Climate Center (NWCC) Home Page and
Anonymous FTP server.
The address to the NWCC Home Page is: http://www.wcc.nrcs.usda.gov/
The address to the Anonymous FTP server is: ftp.wcc.nrcs.usda.gov
